Synopsis
This course covers the most basic of derivative contracts, namely futures contracts, and how they work. The main uses of futures contracts are to reduce risk, to lock in the supply or sale of a commodity in the future, and to earn a profit for taking on risks. We also discuss the uses of futures contracts and the various risks associated with futures.

- (1) Know the difference between a spot transaction and a futures contract
(2) Understand how a forward contract compares with a futures contract
(3) Know the use of futures for hedging risks and for speculative purposes
(4) Know what going “long” and “short” mean
(5) Know the mechanics of a futures contract

Synopsis
This course covers two types of derivative instruments, namely interest rate swaps that allow users to exchange fixed interest payments for floating payments in the same currency and vice versa, and cross–currency swaps which involves two currencies.

- (1) Know how the notional size of the interest rate derivative contracts compare with those of derivatives on other underlying assets or instruments
(2) Understand how a cross–currency swap may be used for hedging the risk of a bond issuance in a foreign currency as well as for investment purpose
(3) Know the mechanics of interest rate swaps and their use in asset–liability management
(4) Know some of the risks associated with these swaps

This course covers the derivative contracts. It begins with the raison d’être for derivatives and the futures contracts before moving onto options on various underlying assets and indices. Emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanics of the contracts, their uses for hedging risks or implementing investment views as well as potential pitfalls associated with their use. The discussion on option valuation and option risk measures focus on how various factors affect the values of options qualitatively.
